Description

This exquisite serving platter is a testament to the timeless Ottchil technique, a traditional Korean lacquer craft. Handcrafted with meticulous care, it begins with the raw lacquer extracted from the sap of Toxicodendron vernicifluum trees, filtered and refined to perfection. This lacquer is then applied onto a carefully selected piece of Fraxinus chinensis in pristine condition. After drying, our skilled artisan repeats the varnishing process layer by layer, over six times. The final layers are deftly polished with soybean oil and calcified dear horn to obtain radiant colors and create a natural gloss finish. The color palette is inspired by Saekdongot, a type of Hanbok (Korean traditional clothing) with vibrant patchwork stripes. Enjoy one side today and the other side the other day, just like you have two different trays depending on your mood!

  • Size: 40 x 30 cm
  • Handmade in South Korea

Instructions for Care

  • Please avoid using the tray in an oven, dishwasher, microwave, or exposing it to direct heat.
  • To maintain its look, avoid using abrasive sponges or sharp cutlery that may cause scratches.
  • Prolonged soaking in water should be avoided.
  • Before its first use, we recommend exposing the tray to light without any objects on its surface for 3 to 4 days to preserve its original intense colors.

Ottchil

Beyond its aesthetic charm and durability, Ottchil has held a special place in Korean craftsmanship for centuries, thanks to its practicality. Ottchil forms a coated film that’s resilient against spills and stains, making it perfect for everyday items such as cups, bowls, and plates. In the past, it was even used as a substitute for refrigeration, acting as a natural preservative thanks to its moisture-proof, waterproof, and insect-repellent properties. Today, Ottchil remains highly coveted for its natural and eco-friendly approach to achieving highly-durable finishes on various surfaces, including wood, metal, porcelain, and even paper.
